Within the hour, Mary and Catherine had joined them for breakfast, and upon completion, Mr. Darcy called for their carriage, and the two set off for Pemberley.

Jared and David were resting at the inn in Meryton until another driver and carriage from Pemberley could be sent to fetch them. Mr. Darcy had sent an express yesterday to organize it and was assured the two would be well cared for. In the meantime, Mr. Darcy had hired a driver and four footmen to drive him and Elizabeth, in the Darcy carriage, to Pemberley.

The first leg of their journey was difficult, travelling over the rural country roads between Meryton and St. Albans. Fitzwilliam could hardly believe they had travelled them at such a pace, just yesterday. When they reached the point where the attack had taken place, Fitzwilliam closed the curtains on the coach so Elizabeth would not have to see it. They rested a short time in Luton and then resumed their journey, not stopping again until they reached Milton. Milton was nearly fifty miles from London, and Fitzwilliam finally breathed easier knowing they were now half a day into their journey home.

They ate a light repast of meat, cheese, and wine while the horses rested. Fitzwilliam updated Mrs. Reynolds and Mr. Carson about the previous day’s events and then sent them ahead to the Leicester Inn. In good time, they too were on the road to Leicester.

Their journey to Leicester was another fifty miles and by the time they reached the Leicester Inn they were both tired and exhausted. The owners of the inn were well acquainted with Mr. Darcy, and offered him the highest service, and best rooms. They were pleased to meet his new wife, and offered hearty congratulations on their marriage and well wishes that Mrs. Darcy would recover from her malady. The bruise on her face had set them to asking questions, word having already travelled regarding yesterday’s events along the road.

The members of the Darcy staff who had travelled ahead, including Mrs. Reynolds and Mr. Carson had helped the inn staff to prepare their rooms. Just when they were most tired, Mr. Darcy appreciated the attention to detail his staff offered. When they arrived at the Leicester Inn, all was in order for them. Mrs. Reynolds was also able to divert some of the attention the couple was receiving when the inn guests learned who was in residence. Many longed to catch a glimpse of the new Mrs. Darcy, not just to witness the elegance and poise she was destined to have, but also to gawk at the wounds she had received at the hands of the vicious ruffians.

Mrs. Reynolds served the meal the inn staff had prepared and while they ate, she laid out Mrs. Darcy’s things and assisted Mr. Carson with readying their bath.

“Mr. Darcy, your room is ready, sir.” Samuel Carson stated to Fitzwilliam.

“Thank you Mr. Carson, that will be all.”

Mr. Carson bowed and left the room with Mrs. Reynolds leaving Fitzwilliam and Elizabeth alone.
